beauty in autumn

This past weekend I went on a road trip in a car full of friends to Lynchburg. The drive to Lynchburg is a particularly beautiful one, and in autumn is absolutely breathtaking. I have long disliked autumn for the insufficient and singular reason that winter follows it. I really abhor the cold weather, which also causes my body pain, and so I have resented autumn for ushering in the cooler weather. This autumn, however, I challenged myself to appreciate it and was challenged further by a friend. My friend from Florida was dialoguing about how she was excited to travel to Virginia, especially at peak season for the fall foliage. In hearing her enthusiasm I felt convicted, shocked by my resolute stubbornness to neglect and not appreciate the beauty that surrounds us in the autumn season. In response to my friend’s words, I determined to pay special attention to the foliage and savor the comeliness of the season this year.
Nearly all of the 3½ hours that I was in the car I looked out of the window, allowing myself to be captivated by the sheer and wild beauty of the trees that surrounded. The mountains appeared completely ablaze with the sweeping colors of autumn as far as the eye could see. The trees wore these burning colors so well, flaunting themselves like Joseph in his coat of many colors. Seeing these things moved me, and I found myself feeling overwhelmingly loved. I was amazed at the goodness and love of the Creator to adorn/enrobe creation with such exquisite beauty for man to dwell in and enjoy.
