Dance Over Time

While I was
re-reading some chapters of Van Der Leeuw for my paper I came across the part
where he talks about how modern day dance has basically destroyed what dance
is. He talks about how dance in modern day is all about the performance and has
lost it ritualistic connection to the essence. I would have to agree to an
extent, the movements have become controlled and the expression and connection
is lost. It is lost in the music, it is lost in the lyrics, it is lost in the
costumes, it is lost on the stage. The closest form of dance to true dance is
ironically called modern dance. This dance is about the body’s natural movements
but even it is drawn away from what dance once was. Dance today has become art
its outs are with itself instead of the outcome movement of the holy.
