Image vs. Music

While exploring
my project and paper I came across this quote is Van Der Leeuw
“An
image demands space; music demands time.” (300)
This
quote really stood out to me as at first I wasn’t sure what it was trying to
say. Like always I wrote the quote down and began to explore the remainder of
the content to develop an understanding by drawing back to my project.
My
project was on the distinctive dimensions of experience through different dance
choreography. Through my project I came to find the lyrics create an image
while the music destroys it. Taking my finding I decided to take a closer look
at the quote.
I
believe the image demands space because it is telling you something. It demands
space for the story to be told. It wants you to see it.
On
the other hand, I believe the music demands time because it is undefinable unlike
the image. It doesn’t have a set story it wants you to explore its essence. It
is mythical and abstract and goes much deeper than the image.
As
a side note, this may be a wrong interpretation but I also noticed that
depending on where you are as a person in a certain point in time the same
musical song could hold a completely different feel.
