Kristina Razoumova-Why are we more prone to shut out beauty?

Why are we more prone to shut out beauty?

Tonight after my 6-9 class I walked across campus to my car. Just like every other Wednesday night I crossed by DSU where there are a mere few students at this hour. But unlike any another night I was hit with the disturbing realization of the downfall of our current culture. Tonight was a clear, peaceful… dare I say it, beautiful night. Passing DSU I was greeted with the most remarkable sound. A sorrowful but yet comforting melody surrounded me and resuscitated me out of my deep contemplation (I’m often in my own head). I noticed a fellow student playing the violin so elegantly, I did not know his story but with no effort I just understood. The open starry night sky fell as a backdrop to the stage and the gentle breeze filled the nearby trees with life as their movements began to immerse into the sorrowfulness allure of the tune. In that moment I witnessed beauty but she had not greeted me, the belief of being part of this realm was wrecked when I noticed another student putting in her headphones to block out the sound of the violin. This minute action angered and baffled me at the same time. How could some be ignorant of such beauty taking place? Surly no song you can play on your phone can generate this experience. Nothing can bring you down faster from cloud 9 then the realization of the unkind, unconscious, unaware actions of those in our society. Despite this obscene realization I am tremendously thankful I have had the opportunity experience the moment in which a bridge was opened to reality by the messenger.

I don’t have the answer but why are people more prone to shut out beauty? Why isn’t everyone able to take part in this experience?
